A local retailer could save the Post Office in Tynagh, south-east Galway, after expressing interest in applying for the contract of the post office.

An Post announced that it will close the post office in Tynagh from the end of February, however Kieran Harney of Harney’s SPAR could operate the post office in the village if An Post accepts the proposal.

An Post have said that they will examine this as an option.

Minister Ciaran Cannon has thrown his support behind Kieran Harney, saying that it is the best way forward in keeping a Post Office open to serve people in the village and the surrounding district.

He also said that he will work with local representatives to ‘ensure that every effort is made toward this objective’.

“I was very sorry to learn of the recent death of Mary Moloney, who was the post mistress in Tynagh, and I extend my sincerest condolences to her family at this time.

“It has also come to my attention that An Post intends to close the Post Office in Tynagh from 28th February 2019 and that all payments will thereafter transfer to Killimor from 1st March 2019.

‘As this would be a tremendous loss to the local community, I welcome the proposal from Kieran Harney of Harney`s SPAR, as a local shop, to apply for the Post Office contract in Tynagh,” said Minister Cannon.
