Galway County Council has denied permission for a housing development of eight apartments in Oranmore.
It was planned to demolish a single storey office building on Main Street, Oranmore and build two apartment buildings in its place.
The development would have included one block with two 1-bed apartments and three 2-bed apartments, and another with one 1-bed apartment and two 2-bed homes.
The owner of the site, John Curley, had previously been denied permission by the county council to demolish the office and build three retail units in its place.
At the time the county council said it was because this land is designated for Residential use only under the area development plan.
A number of objections were filed to the from locals nearby and the Oranmore Community Development Association.
They said that the size of the project was too large for the site, and were also concerned about the lack of onsite car parking in the plans.
The application stated that the apartment residents could make use of the public car park across the street.
County planners noted in their report that the developers intended to connect the apartment buildings up with Irish Water.
But since no pre-connection query form or evidence of communication with Irish Water was contained in the application, they were unable to determine if the public mains and sewers could cater to the apartments.
For the reasons stated above the county council decided not to grant planning permission for the development.
