Tuam AC Juveniles
The County Galway Cross Country Championships (even ages) took place on Sunday in the Palace Fields. Strong winds and rain on occasion made for tough running conditions. This did not deter the 45 young athletes from the club who took part in a range of distances in the U10, U12 and U14 age categories.
The girls U10 team was led home by Grace McGrath who is in great running form having recently won the East Galway Primary Schools XC race and who finished second in the County Galway Primary Schools Final last week.
Grace had a superb race again on Sunday and finished in 2nd place overall to Hazel Fahy from Loughrea A.C. The girls team of Grace McGrath (2nd), Siofra Phelan (6th), Rebecca Moynihan (8th) and Jessica Moynihan (28th) scored 37 points, just 7 points behind Craughwell AC who won gold.
Also representing this team were Taillte O’ Callaghan (29th) and Sadhbh Hayes (32nd). The girl’s B team also ran very well. Many of the team members have just recently joined the club and did very well to finish in 7th position.
Team members included: Ciara Mooney, Kate Halligan, Leah Delaney, Saoirse Maguire, Aisling Hession, Evie Gallagher and Claire Kilmartin.
The first gold medal of the day for Tuam AC was won by the boys U10 team. Isaac Costello had a fantastic race to finish in 4th position overall with team members Eanna McGrath (6th), Cian McGinn (8th) and Ryan Hession (10th) following closely behind.
The boys won the gold medal with a score of 28 points with Loughrea AC in 2nd (51 points) and Clare River Harriers in third (78 points). Also, representing this team were Dylan Monaghan (11th) and Brett Kane (12th).
Ben Hynes ran a great race finishing in 13th position with his team claiming 6th position in the team rankings. Ben was joined by team mates Thomas Riordan, Oisin Munnelly and Matt Riggs.
The highlight of the day was in the U12 girls race when Tuam took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place over the 2km distance.
Myah Gallagher was in exceptional form and ran a gallant race taking an early lead and winning in style with team members Danielle Moynihan and Eva Burke following in second and third place respectively.
Abbi McGrath was the fourth member of the team finishing in 17th place overall giving the girls a total team score of 23 points to win the team gold medal. Also, making up this team were Savanagh O’ Callaghan and Caoimhe Phelan who both ran very well.
This is a very competitive age group within the club and team members Saoirse Hunter, Michelle Hession, India Cunniffe and Ellie Sheridan all ran exceptionally well but just missed out on silverware on this occasion.
The boys U12 team also claimed the gold medal in the team event. Cian Halligan was first home of the Tuam boys running a brilliant race to finish in second place behind Enda Keane from East Galway A.C.
Team members Oisin Kelly (4th), Ross Mitchell (5th) and Daragh Kenny (8th) all ran exceptionally well to finish close together and in the top 10 securing the gold medal in the process. Cian Rafferty and Ultan Tighe were the 5th and 6th members of this team.
Well done also to Kevin Munnelly and Mark Miskell who both ran very well but missed out on the team prize with just the top 6 boys being included.
Aoife Hession was the only representative in the girls U14 competition. She finished in 11th position overall over the 3km distance.
Oisin Phelan ran a strong race in the U14 boys event finishing in a very respectable 6th position overall. He was followed closely by Conan Tobin who also had a great race and who finished just behind Oisin in 8th position.
Well done to Charlie Boyle who was the 3rd representative from Tuam AC in this race. Charlie has just recently joined the club and has improved greatly over the past few weeks.
Well done to everyone who took part and we wish all those who have qualified, the best of luck, as they prepare for the Connaught Cross Country Finals.
Club training times may be found on the Tuam AC Juveniles Facebook page. Please note that Wednesday training has now moved from the Palace Fields to Tuam Stars astro pitches for the winter months.

The sympathy of the club goes to the King and extended families on the death of Mickey who was a lifelong member, player and trustee of the club.
Mickey played with distinction for Abbey throughout the 50’s and won a Junior medal in 1960 also. Known as a skillful; and tough hurler he gave it his all for Abbeyknockmoy in league and championship.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:
We defeated Caherlistrane by 2-10 to 1-6 in the quarter-final of the senior football championship played in Tuam Stadium on Sunday. The teams went in level at half time 1-3 each. However, Corofin took advantage of the strong wind in the second half to win convincingly. The Corofin goals were scored by Gary Sice, one in each half.
Well done to the team and all involved on reaching another County semi-final. We play Annaghdown in that game while the other semi-final will be contested by Mountbellew-Moylough and the winners of Milltown and Salthill-Knocknacarra.
These fixtures have yet to be confirmed.
UNDER AGE:
Our under 16 team were defeated by Claregalway in division 1 on Saturday on a score line of 1-7 to 3-5.
BEREAVEMENTS:
The death occurred last week of Paddy Roche, Cloonmore, Tuam. Paddy was the last surviving member of the Corofin Senior team that captured the Club’s second County title in 1946. Corofin defeated St Grellan’s, Ballinasloe in the final with the then 19-year-old Paddy scoring the team’s only goal.
We sympathise with his brother Austin, relatives, neighbours and friends.
The death also occurred last week of Paddy Reilly, Sylane. Paddy won North Board and County Junior titles with Corofin in 1959 and 1963. He also played hurling with Seán Higgins’ (a team with players from Sylane and Tuam areas) in the 1950s and 60s. We sympathise with his family, neighbours and friends.
May they rest in peace.
LADIES FOOTBALL:
The Corofin ladies were defeated in the Senior Championship Final on a final score of Kilkerrin-Clonberne 7-16 to Corofin 3-6. Hard luck ladies.
