galway daily news Storm Deirdre weather warning downgraded for Galway

A Status Orange warning for wind has been issued by Met Éireann for County Galway, as Storm Ali approaches from the Atlantic.

The first named storm of the season is expected to batter Ireland tomorrow morning with gusts of up to 120 km/h.

Galway City Council’s  weather assessment team met this morning to review this warning and they say there is a chance of wave overtopping at Salthill.

Roads crews will be on standby from early tomorrow morning to close the Prom Road if necessary.

It is expected that the Prom Road will definitely be closed tomorrow morning but the exact times will be decided by crews on the ground.

Both car parks in Salthill will be closed this evening (Tuesday) as a precaution.

Met Éireann say Storm Ali will track close to the west coast from the early hours of Wednesday morning until late afternoon.

They have issued the status orange weather warning for all counties on the West Coast, Dublin Meath, Kildare and the border counties – while the Met Office in Britain has issued the equivalent warning for the rest of Ulster.

South to southwest winds could reach 80 km/h with gusts between 110 and 120 km/h for a time in some areas.

The Atlantic Coast will be hardest hit by the storm at first and it will hit the east later in the morning.

The warning is valid from tomorrow, Wednesday, at 5.00 am until to 1.00 pm.
