Galway Daily news Galway University Hospitals launches Staff Recognition Awards

Galway University Hospitals is honouring its employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure patients get the best care with the new Staff Recognition Awards.

The award, which be granted to one staff member each quarter, is open to any employee at Merlin Park Hospital or University Hospital Galway.

Chris Kane, General Manager of Galway University Hospitals said: “Every day we hear stories of colleagues who perform at a level above and beyond normal job requirements and expectations and now we will be able to formally recognise this.

“The Staff Recognition Awards are one of a series of initiatives underway to enhance employee engagement. I am very proud of the staff working in both of our hospitals and the care they provide for our patients.”

Staff members can be nominated by their colleagues or a manager for exceptional effort and contribution in the area they work in.

At the end of each quarter, management will pick the nominee who best suits the award’s criteria.

The two hospitals that together make up GUH are a major centre of healthcare with a wide range of specialties, serving a major regional centre for cancer and cardiac care.

They serve a catchment area that covers a million people along the West from Donegal to Tipperary North.

The Staff Recognition Awards are meant to recognise the work of those who make this possible.

“The Staff Recognition Awards aims to acknowledge and celebrate staff who go the extra mile for patients, who give an outstanding level of support to patients and colleagues or who are providing leadership by motivating, mentoring and inspiring others,” said Chris Kane.

While staff at these hospitals typically go the extra mile in their specialties, they are often impaired by a lack of sufficient resources.

A major new cancer treatment centre planned for UHG has already been set back by as much as six months by a massive budget shortfall in the HSE.

Design works had yet to even begin on the centre, which was expected to come online in 2021.
