Galway daily news NUI Galway Students' Union launches 2018 life skills courses

The Students’ Union at NUI Galway is launching this year’s range of life skills courses for the students in the 2018/2019 academic year.

Since 2009 the Students’ Union has been running a variety of practical courses for NUIG’s 17,500 students to improve their chance at a job, learn what to do in a medical crisis, and general knowledge for all areas of life.

Megan Reilly, President of the NUIG Students’ Union said, “We are delighted to announce details of our Life Skills courses for the year ahead. Having attended these courses myself I know first-hand how invaluable the knowledge I gained has been.”

“Whether it’s learning how to help someone who may be suicidal or gaining the skills to administer CPR. All of these courses help to provide a well-rounded education for our students whilst also helping them to make their CV’s stand out from the crowd when looking for jobs.”

Some of the potentially life saving skills that can be picked up include a Cardiac First Responder Course, a half-day, fully certified course that teaches all the basic skills on what to do for people who are suffering from stroke, cardiac arrest, heart attack, or choking.

Students are taught how to performs CPR, as well as how to operate an Automated Defibrillator.

There is also a three day First Aid Responder course that includes the Cardiac Responder Course, as well as how to deal with an unconscious patient, handling injuries, shock, burns, and hypothermia.

For those who already know First Aid, there is a one-day refresher course available to brush up on your skills.

What can be just as much a matter of saving lives is Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training.

Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for our suicide rate, with almost 500 people taking their own lives each year.

This two day course is open to anyone over the age of 18, teaching skills to help reduce the immediate risk of suicide and to support those at risk.

Other life skills that could benefit you include a Mixed Martial Arts Self-Defence Course that covers the basics of protecting yourself from an attacker.

Sign Language Classes that, after ten weeks, should leave you able to conduct a basic conversation in Irish Sign Language.

Disclosure Training by Galway Rape Crisis Centre. Learn how to properly handle when someone discloses an incident of sexual violence, and examine pervasive attitudes and beliefs towards sexual violence.

This course is a pre-requisite for anyone looking to volunteer with Galway Rape Crisis Centre.

Child Protection Training, certified by the National Youth Council, covers topics relevant to anyone working or volunteering where they would encounter children, including how to identify signs of abuse.

The Anti-Racism course from Galway One World Centre tackles injustice at the local and global level by examining the roots of poverty and shared experiences of racism.

It asks participants to question the way the world works and the role they play in it, to better appreciate the value of diversity in Ireland.

And lastly there are also classes available for Yoga, and Manual Handling Skills. That is to say, the lifting of things.

Any one of these courses would look great on a CV as well as teaching valuable skills to carry forward with you.
