The Office of Public Works has submitted plans with Galway County Council to demolish and replace several buildings at its regional headquarters in Headford.
In the proposed development the OPW would demolish two existing office buildings at the south end of the site and replace them with a two storey, L-shaped office block with a floor area of 1,226m².
Another, smaller office block consisting of training and conference facilities will be altered and refurbished, while a maintenance fitting workshop will also be demolished a replaced with one double the height.
Galway East TD Sean Canney welcomed the application, saying the new facilities would be beneficial to the Headford area.
“The development will enhance the centre of Headford and will provide modern office space for the management and engineering staff for the region.”
“Headford is a town with great potential and this development by a state agency is a vote of confidence in the town.” Deputy Canney concluded.
Other, external works planned for the site include adding new car parking and bicycle stands, replacing the boundary wall on the south-west side, and landscaping the site where it meets St. George’s square.
A small security hut at the entrance to the service yard would be bulldozed, and a new ESB substation will be put in place.
A decision from the county council on whether to grant permission for the work to go ahead is expected by the end of next month.
Public submissions about the proposed development can be made up until September 6.
