Six stretches of road on Inishbofin to undergo repairs

The Department of the Gaeltact has granted €43,613 for repair works on six stretches of road on Inishbofin.

Matched funding will be provided by Galway County Council who are in discussions with the department about further roadworks on Inis Mór and Inis Oírr.

€17,250 will be spent on works on 360m of Clossey road. The next largest grant is €10,875 for resurfacing and other works on 150m of road near the Dolphin Hotel.

€6,570 has been sanctioned for resurfacing 150m of road in Westquarter Village, while €4,988 has been granted for a new surface on 325m of road between the New Pier and the Church.

The final two sets of works on Inishbofin are a single surface dressing on 295m of road east of the airstrip for which €3,000 in funding has been announced and €750 for works on the new pier.

Announcing the funding Minister of State for the Islands Joe McHugh said, “These kinds of investments are about improving the lives of islanders, improving accessibility, investing in the future of island communities and in works that will sustain and develop vital tourism offerings.”

“Our islands are truly at the heart of what is best loved and admired about Irish culture and these kind of investments demonstrate how highly we value these communities.”

In total €1,073,863 in funding was announced for works on islands in Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Cork, and Donegal as well as 21 coastal roads.

Inishmulclohy in Sligo; Bear Island, Long Island, Whiddy Island, Dursey Island, and Sherkin Island in County Cork; Inishturk, Claggan, and Clare Island in Mayo; and Árainn Mhór, Oileán an Bhráighe and Tory Island in County Donegal are the other islands that will see works done.

The single largest project announced is €174,000 for the construction of a helipad on Inishturk which the department said will be an important resource to support the population of the island.
