The second round of twitter voting concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning (16th May) in our competition to select ‘Galway’s Greatest Hurler’ and the 56 still standing were reduced to just 16 players.
For the second time in succession, Joe Cooney topped the poll scoring an amazing 95% but he had new comrades on the podium as again, three players registered more than 80%.
After being drawn against each other in the first round, Pete Finnerty and Tony Keady were in different groups for Round Two and finished with 82% ad 84%. With Gerry McInerney also winning his quarter-final, the 1980s Galway half back line are showing strongly.
The top player from each of the 14 quarter-final polls qualified for the semi-finals along with the two best runners-up. Noel Lane (42%) and Bernie Forde (34%) stay in the competition with former GAA President Joe McDonagh (33%) just missing out.
The semi-finals, which start this morning (Wednesday) will see the remaining participants in four groups of four. Only the winners advance to Thursday’s final.
As mentioned before the competition started, any ties would be settled by the adjudication committee and but they were not called upon to make any decisions in this round.
Some big names to depart after the quarter-finals included two-time winning captain Conor Hayes, three-time All-Star Daithi Burke, legendary corner back Sylvie Linnane, recent Galway Sports Awards Hall of Fame winner PJ Molloy, Portumna’s inspirational Damien Hayes and McDonagh.
The semi-final pairings will appear below shortly after the quarter-final results and the polls will stay open for 18 hours. The FINAL takes place on Thursday.
