We would like to wish all athletes and coaches the very best as they prepare for the Connacht finals over the next number of weeks.

KILKERRIN UNITED

Last Sunday proved to be an historic day for Kilkerrin United as the senior side won the TP Brennan Connacht Shield beating beat Mayo side, Swinford FC 1-0 at the Roscommon & District League Grounds in Lecarrow. Despite lining out without the competition’s top scorer, Liam Boyle, Kilkerrin’s strength in depth would prove vital on what was a warm, energy sapping day.

Swinford forced a corner in only the second minute putting early pressure on the Kilkerrin goal. A quick Jason Ward freekick on 13 minutes set Conor Moran free on the right and from his cross, Declan Murphy’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by a Swinford defender. Conor Moran had a terrific long-range shot on the half-hour mark but it was well saved by the Swinford keeper.

The only goal of the game was scored by Declan Murphy in injury time at the end of the first half. Keith Mahon took a quick throw on the left to Aidan Kitt, who picked out Murphy at the edge of the penalty area and, from twenty-five yards, he curled an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Swinford net.

Swinford enjoyed more possession in the second half but with Kilkerrin’s back four of Paddy Gordon, Sean Collins, Kevin Comer & Jason Ward in top form, Fiachna McEntee’s goal was never under serious threat and the keeper dealt well with some dangerous crosses.

Damian Mahon had a header well saved by the Swinford keeper at the start of the second half & Conor Moran came close to adding a second for Kilkerrin in the 78th minute when he stuck the post with a powerful shot from outside the box. Cillian Halvey & Damian Mahon never gave Swinford time on the ball in midfield as they struggled to create chances.

Substitutes Evan Fahy, Kieran Gannon & Eoin Folan eased the pressure when they were introduced and Kilkerrin held on to claim their first provincial title.

Man of the match Aidan Kitt was presented with the trophy by CFA Chairperson, Padraig McHale & CFA Administrator, Gerry Tully, himself a former Kilkerrin United manager. It was a very proud day for all associated with the club and the management team of Martin Walsh, Paul Naughton & Donie Fahy deserve great credit for their successful season.

Thanks to all who came out to support the team on Sunday and to all who welcomed the team back to Kilkerrin on Sunday evening. Thanks also to all who sponsored the team and put advertisements in the match programme. Next up is the semi final of the RDFL First Divison Cup on Sunday at 11am against CP Ajax in Castleplunkett.

U12 girls drew 6-6 with Dunmore Town with goals from Hannah Morrissey (5) & Lucia Kelly.

U11 boys had an exciting game against neighbours Moylough ’79 in Kilkerrin on Friday. Well done to both teams. Eoin Morrisey, Rian Hargadon & Sam Nolan were all on target for Kilkerrin.

U12 boys drew 3-3 with Moylough ’79 with Cillian Brennan, Enda Keane & Luke Walsh getting the goals.

U14 boys lost out 4-1 to Glen Celtic despite Daniel Stephens goal.

U16 boys lost out 2-0 to a strong Ballaghaderreen team on Saturday.

Congratulations to James King & Pauline Smyth who were married on Saturday. We wish them a lifetime of health & happiness together.
