Nearly €3.5 million in new funding has been allocated to improve the homes of older people in Galway to make them more comfortable and accessible.

That’s according to Galway West TD and Minister of State for Rural affairs Seán Kyne who says the money is going to the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People

The Department of Housing is giving €1.88 million to Galway county council and just under €900,000 to the city council.

The balance of the funding will come from the councils themselves; the county council is contributing a further €471,000 and the city council will spend €211,000 of its own funds.

Deputy Kyne says it is important to fund these adaptations to help older people stay in their homes.

“The Housing Adaptation Grant Scheme provides funding to contribute to the cost of works which enable people, in particular, people with additional challenges such as restricted mobility, to stay in their own homes.

“I know from my work in the constituency that there is a constant need for funding for these works and that schemes such as the Housing Adaptation Scheme make a direct and meaningful difference to the lives of people in communities across Galway.”

This year’s funding for the Housing Adaptation Grant from the Department of Housing is up 21% for Galway county and 4% for the city compared with 2017.
