Gardaí will be enacting a special policing plan for Rag Week in Galway City this month, starting on Sunday.
Over the past week, Gardaí have been liaising with the universities, student unions, resident and community groups, publicans, off licence operators and Galway City Council.
This has been with the goal of creating a proactive policing plan for the major student event, which is always incredibly popular in Galway City.
University of Galway’s students’ union is fundraising for local charities with the RAG Raise and Give Week 2025 from Sunday 9th – Friday 14th of February.
The two chosen charities for this year’s drive are Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Autism Partnership.
Inspector Darragh Browne of Gaillimh Garda Station said, “Our city has a great reputation for entertainment and nightlife, and we all need to do our bit to keep it that way.”
Additional patrols from the Community Policing Unit, Drug Unit and Roads Policing Units will be operating over the course of the week.
Gardaí will also be actively visiting licensed premises during the course of RAG week as part of this plan to enforce laws and local bye-laws.
“All aspects of the law, including local bye-laws, will be enforced and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated. Respect those around you. Nobody wants their fun ruined by antisocial behaviour.”
Inspector Browne added that you should always plan ahead when it comes to your personal safety on a night out.
“When it comes to personal safety, remember to be streetwise. Always plan ahead; how are you are you getting there and back? Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.”
